WHEAT KINGS' MEMORIAL CUP HISTORY

1948-49
Winners of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in the spring of 1949, the Wheat Kings defeated the Port Arthur Bruins to earn the right to play the Calgary Buffaloes for the Abbott Cup (which was presented annually to the western Canadian champion). After upsetting Calgary, Brandon moved on to the best of seven Memorial Cup final against the Montreal Royals. Since each team won three and tied another in the first 7 games, the CAHA ruled that an eighth game be played in Winnipeg. Montreal came from behind to beat the Whet Kings in the deciding game. Members of the ’48-49 team included goalkeeper Ray Frederick, Frank King, Joe Crozier and Glen Sonmor.

1979-79
One of the best teams to ever come out of the WCHL, the ’79 Wheat Kings were led by coach Dunc McCallum and the explosive line of Brian Propp, Ray Allison and Laurie Boschman. After posting a record breaking 58-5-9 record during the regular season, they defeated Portland in six games to capture their first ever President’s Cup. Brandon finished the three team round robin with a 2-3-0 record. The Wheat Kings did manage to advance to the Championship Final that year, only to lose out to the Peterborough Petes 2-1 in double overtime. Members of the ’79 team included Propp, Allison, Boschman, Bart Hunter, Brad and Kelly McCrimmon, Dave Stewart, Steve Patrick, Greg Mann, Brad Kempthorne, Darren Gusdal, Wes Coulson, Don Dietrich, Don Gillen, Brant Kiessig, Dave McDonald, Dave Chartier, Tim Lockridge, Kelly Elcombe, Rick Knickle and Larry Roberts.

1994-95
Since the City of Kamloops was hosting the ’95 MasterCard Memorial Cup, the Wheat Kings earned the right to attend when they lost out to the Blazers in the league final. Brandon had earned the right to advance to its first league championship in sixteen years thanks to a dramatic 7-game series against Prince Albert in the Eastern Conference Final. Brandon wound up dropping a 2-1 decision to Detroit in the semi-finals . On the ’95 roster were Bryan McCabe, who led the team with three goals and 7 points in four games, Wade Redden, Mark Dutiaume, Mike Dubinsky, Darren Ritchie, Peter Schaefer, Colin Cloutier, Darren Van Oene, Justin Kurtz, Marty Murray, Kevin Pozzo, Scott Laluk, Mike Leclerc, Byron Penstock, Brian Elder, Kelly Smart, Jeff Staples and Alex Vasilevski.

1995-96
After losing just two games in winning their first three best of seven playoff series, the Wheat Kings carried that momentum into the league finals, defeating the Spokane Chiefs four games to one. At the MasterCard Memorial Cup in Peterborough, the Wheat Kings won their first two games before losing to Granby in the final game of the round robin. Brandon then lost a heartbreaker to the hometown Petes in Saturday’s sudden death semi-final. Members of the ’96 WHL Championship club were captain Chris Dingman, Mike Leclerc, Wade Redden, Justin Kurtz, Bobby Brown, Peter Schaefer, Dorian Anneck, Dan Tetrault, Kelly Smart, Darren Van Oene, Mark Dutiaume, Cory Cyrenne, Darryl Stockham, Vinnie Jonasson, Andrei Lupandin, Sven Butenschon, Burke Henry, Ryan Robson, Stefan Cherneski, Brian Elder, David Haun and Jody Lehman.
